Curious About Etsy? Check Out Their Offices - I found this online pictorial tour of Etsy.com headquarters in Brooklyn, NY at Business Insider. Consisting of 28 images, if you've ever wondered about the underpinings of this online marketplace giant, you'll want to take a quick look at their offices and some of the people (and dogs!) who work there. Business Insider reports that Etsy anticipates handling $400 million dollars of business this year. The article also reports that Etsy has been out of the red and running at a profit for about a year. Can't quite remember the year Etsy got up and running - I believe it was 2005 - so not a bad inception to profit period for this ...

Selecting a Craft Show Credit Card Processor - Asking yourself this question? Well, check out this recent blog entry about selecting a craft show credit card processor and the feedback provided by other arts and crafts business owners. Of course, take all advice from posters with a grain of salt. What is good for one arts and crafts business owner might not be good for you. Many variables enter into this such as how often you anticipate having to use a remote craft show processor and the cost involved. And, keep in mind that some (or all)  of the posters may be associated with the product they are recommending.Selecting a Cr...

Arts and Crafts Year-End Tax Strategies - There are only a few more days prior to the end of the year, so if you want to take steps to lower your tax bill for 2010, it's time to get hopping. One fairly easy thing you can do to donate excess inventory. Since the period between Christmas and New Year's is relatively quiet for most arts and crafts businesses, it's a good time to go through inventory and weed out those items or raw materials you feel are best served donated rather than saved for future use. Also, check out the Last Minute Small Business Tax-Savings Tips blog written by Mitchell York, About.com's Entrepreneurs Guide. It's a great one-stop resource for actions you can take to reduce your taxes....

Find Arts and Crafts Business Partners by Networking - I recently wrote an article about networking while teaching arts and crafts classes. One of the useful aspects of networking is that you can find other artists and crafters with whom you may be interested in forming a business relationship. Along those lines, I found this article about three crafters who joined together to open a retail arts and crafts shop named Anything Goes, featuring a variety of artists and crafters from their local area.  Artists themselves, two of the founders met a lot of their featured designers on the craft fair circuit. To find out more about this shop, visit the ...

Advice for New Craft Business Owners - I found this article about expanding your leather craft hobby into a full or part time business that contains some good advice for brand-new arts or crafts business owners.  The article is tailored to leather crafts but is applicable for all arts or crafts. It starts with deciding what type of craft you want to make, and moves onto setting up a workspace and promoting yourself.  Well worth a quick read - just make sure you scroll past the advertising to the middle of the page to find the article....

Beginner Tips for Organizing Craft Space - Found this short article that may be of interest to brand new arts and crafts business owners who operate their craft business out of their home. It discussed five different points: Do you have adequate workspace? Do you have adequate storage space? If you can't finish your project today, do you have space to leave the project out? How easy is it to access and put away your supplies It's written by Bonnie Joy Dewkett, whose  company, The Joyful Organizer®, creates and implements organizational systems for the home or office. ...

Etsy Stats for November 2010 - Haven't checked Etsy.com stats lately.  Took a quick look today and per the Etsy website, 2 million items were sold in November, 2010 - a record. October 2010 stats are up as well. Of course, it bears mentioning that 2.6 million new items were added to Etsy.com shops during the month of November. Interested in opening an Etsy.com shop? Value Added Sustainable Packaging for Your Arts and Crafts - I recently wrote an article about creating  sustainable packaging which  gives useful information about reusing and resourcing materials for product packaging. You may think the applications would only be suitable for mass container design, however much of the book contains very interesting applications that can be used by any arts or crafts business owner. You might also consider using recycled fabric wraps for your arts and crafts products. One book I recommend is Wrapagami, which is all about the art of gift wrap showing how to use traditional Japanese wraps (furochiki) to wrap customer purchases - using recycled...

Common Hazards With Arts And Crafts Materials - Found a link with that title I thought would be a very informative article, only to click on it to find a link farm.  How annoying.  Anyway, since the subject was in my mind, I thought I would blog quickly about the importance of always reading the material safety data sheet (MSDS) the manufacturer includes with the product for any potentially toxic or hazardous items you are using to make your arts and crafts. Along those lines, here are some links with relevant information about MSDSs: MSDS Online 3M MSDS National MSDS Repository (2008) ...

Cute Arts and Crafts Gift Projects for the Cash Challenged - Students take note!  Looking for some suggestions for arts and crafts you can make as presents to give to family members this holiday season? Check out these free 101 DIY  Gift Ideas.  I checked out a few and the origami boxes looked really easy to make and depending on the paper you use could really be quite attractive.  For the arts and crafts business person, these would make nice holders for different items on the counter at an arts or crafts show too.  There were also some instructions for really cute pop-ups too, including a reindeer, christmas tree, angel and a lot more that aren't seasonal. ...
