Colors range from pale to vivid blue, and some aquamarines have shades of green thrown in. Top quality aquamarines are very clear (unlike most of their close family members, emeralds, which tend to have more inclusions). But even cloudy aquamarines have a charm all their own (like you'll see in the ocean-inspired necklaces in my shopping collection).

Jewelry Trends at the American Music Awards - There's always a wide mixture of trendy and classic jewelry at music awards presentations, and the American Music Awards red carpet (and stage) didn't deviate from that "rule." A few of the designs were reminiscent of ancient jewelry, including Jessica Alba's necklace and bracelets. Rihanna wore an oversize pair of Neil Lane diamond hoops when she arrived for the awards. ... Kate Middleton's Engagement Ring - It's official. Prince William and Kate Middleton are engaged, and Kate is wearing the 18 carat blue sapphire and diamond ring that once belonged to Prince William's mother, Princess Diana. The couple has dated for eight years, and most Royal-watchers felt they were coming close to announcing an engagement.
Sapphire is already a popular engagement gemstone, and a high profile wedding will probably kick its desirability up a notch. Watch for similar designs to become available before William and Kate wed in 2011.

... Kelly Preston's a Classic - Earlier this year, Kelly Preston and John Travolta announced they were expecting a baby. The little boy is due in December, and Travolta recently told the Australian press that their son will be named Benjamin. Take a look back at Kelly Preston's jewelry style and you'll see it's nearly always subdued very classic. Yellow golds seem to be a favorite metal of Kelly's, and she's often photographed wearing unique necklaces. Two of my favorite pieces of jewelry -- the bracelet shown in this recent photo of Kelly and a pair of long (but delicate) chandelier earrings she wore in 2006.

Find a Claddagh Ring - Claddagh rings originated in 17th Century Ireland, but there are several legends about the inspiration for the original design -- some of its characteristics date farther back in time. Claddagh rings have become traditional Irish engagement and wedding rings, and when you go shopping you'll discover wide style variations. They do all have three things in common: hands (signifying friendship) that hold a heart (to represent love) with a crown (for loyalty) above it. The Claddagh rings in this assortment all differ, in their metals, in the materials used to create the heart and in their overall design.
